No! We didn't know what an awesome dog she was going to be but we did meet her parents and they were very calm. As I said yesterday, her doggie parents were raised on hand signals because their owners were deaf so maybe that quiet home helped them be calm. Although we like playing with Lucky, we do try to make sure she has plenty of quiet time so she can get her rest. I also think working on training her RIGHT away really helped. We focused on teaching her good behaviors for months and then she just practiced, practiced, practiced!
Lucky is a soft coated Wheaton terrier so there's part of the answer! She has hair, not fur and this breed is known for their super soft hair. Also, we make sure she gets regular baths with a special shampoo and she has a teaspoon of doggie cod liver oil on her dog food every day. I don't think I'd like the taste but she loves it, and cod liver oil is supposed to be very good for her skin and coat.
We don't do programs every day, and I stay organized by using my calendar. I write everything down that we are doing. I make sure Lucky has plenty of days to just rest and take fun walks!
No, Lucky is a big enough responsibility for us right now. We don't have a big fenced in yard so two dogs might have a hard time playing in our home. We'll just enjoy Lucky!
We started training her when she was very young and she practices her "good behaviors" every day. I think practice is the key! "No" was the first word she learned, and we also went to Canine Good Citizenship classes.
heyy,im from hobart middle school, and i just wanted to know how you got your dog to be so nice.my dog is not nice.i want to train her,but its like impossible!!!
Every dog is different so start with small steps like getting your dog to "sit" on command. Work on just one thing using lots of praise and encouragement. Do it over and over. Never get mad. Watch your tone of voice. Just have your dog repeat the behavior. If you look up Canine Good Citizenship training, there are 10 behaviors you can work on but remember, YOU must have lots of patience!
Oh yes, Lucky is not perfect as you saw yesterday but I don't know of any dog or person that is perfect! Read some of these other questions and answers for some training tips!
Lucky I believe is a very cool because I did not realize what the dogs could do. I like the dog and also I have a question why did you get Lucy, and what is so special about her?
We got Lucky because we were both going to be retiring from working full time so we thought it would be a good time to get a dog. We saw a Wheaten terrier in San Diego and loved her immediately. Our daughter-in-law is highly allergic to animals so we had to get a dog that doesn't shed like Lucky. And my husband said he wanted a dog bigger than a football! I think she's special because she trusts people so much.
Hello, I am from Hobart Middle School. I am really happy i got to see Lucky again!last time I saw you guys was in like 4th grade! I'm so happy you guys came! Are you coming again? I hope you come in future years;)
When Lucky is around people, she is almost always a well behaved young lady! But if other dogs are around, she can be quite excitable so we make sure to keep her on her leash at all times.
We took her to the Valpo Kennel Club and you can find information on line. They do 8 weeks of training to help your dog become a Canine Good Citizen! You can also find the 10 behaviors to work with your dog if you look online.
LUCKY IS THE BEST DOG IVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE! HOW DID YOU TEACH HER ALL DAT STUFF ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? SHES SO TALENTED :) I LOVE HER FROM; FAYTH ROCHE
We were very "lucky" to get our Lucky. Her parents were very calm and so was she even when we first got her. She still loves to play and run around but she calms down quickly. Every dog is different and you just have to love them for who they are.
Thank you for bringing Lucky to my school! (Hobart Middle School) How did you train Lucky to do everything she can do? When I try training my dog to do something, he sits down or goes in his cage. Can you help?
This dog is just amazing simply amazing i wish my dog could do all the things Lucky can but i have one question. Is Lucky a full bred dog ? And she has the same exact bark as my dog !
All Wheaten terriers SHOULD be fluffy if they are properly groomed on a regular schedule. Their hair can become very matted and crusty if owners don't spend the time and money to keep them groomed! That is a Wheaten owner's responsibility!
you are a very kind person its nice to see there are still peaple like you out there and as for youre dog i could tell you love her and i think that reflects on her too it warms my heart have a good day and thanks for coming yesterday sincerly anonymous
im a student at hobart middle school and i was wondering how long it took you to teach lucky all those tricks because my dogs dont even lay down when i tell them to
We started training Lucky when she was only 3 months old and we now practice her "good behaviors" with her every day.. She needs to keep practicing them so she doesn't forget. Be patient with your dog and see some of my advice above. Mrs. Starewicz
Dear Mrs. S My dog was a rescue dog and when being that she was abused, because of this she is afraid of people. How can I get her to not be afraid of people again. Sincerly Yours, Haley Walters From Hobert Middle School (HMS)
That is a tough question to answer. Remember we talked about how Lucky trusts hands and people? Once that trust has been broken, some dogs (and people) have a very hard time learning to trust again. It is wonderful that you rescued your dog. Just be patient with her. She may only learn to trust certain people now and you need to just love her for who she is. It's ok.
No, thank goodness! But we are careful to never open the door unless she's on her leash. Wheatens are curious and will run away to explore or chase other animals so it's our job to keep her safe.
Every dog's personality is so different. Some dogs have better attention spans just like people. Lucky was easy to train because she's so calm. But some other Wheaten terriers have way more energy and can be harder to train for sure.
Another question from the Leo girl. 1 Do you like big, medium, or small dogs best? Why? 2 What is your favorite breed of big dogs and why? 3 Am i asking too many questions
I love all dogs (and cats!) A medium size dog like Lucky works best for us because we travel so much. A bigger dog might need more room. You can never ask too many questions!
I like all animals. Lucky really likes to chase smaller animals like rabbits and squirrels. Once we saw a skunk but I didn't let her chase that animal!
Lucky doesn't have any toys really. She would rather be with real kids and people. She does have a favorite little pillow she puts her head on at night. And she does like a good game of Keep a Way. We throw a ball and then chase her.
When you got Lucky, did you know she was going to be this good of a dog?
ReplyDeleteNo! We didn't know what an awesome dog she was going to be but we did meet her parents and they were very calm. As I said yesterday, her doggie parents were raised on hand signals because their owners were deaf so maybe that quiet home helped them be calm. DeleteWhy is Lucky so cute and soft?!
ReplyDeleteWe take her for baths and grooming about every 5 weeks!

ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Starewicz
ReplyDeleteThis is a great site and I always enjoy pictures and the updates.
Lucky seems to be very bright by the way she interacts with children.
So I have a question for Lucky. Can Lucky tell me what you call the outside layer of a tree trunk?
THE BARK silly! And I know who this is...... MIchael!
ReplyDeleteHas lucky ever gotten semi-sick or really sick?
ReplyDeleteOnce she ran too long and had trouble breathing. Terriers are usually better at short sprints.
DeleteWhat was Lucky's operation about? I'm just curious.
ReplyDeleteShe had a growth under her skin that could have turned cancerous.
DeleteHas Lucky ever got lost?
ReplyDeleteNo, thank goodness! But we are careful to never open the door unless she's on her leash. Wheatens are curious and will run away to explore or chase other animals so it's our job to keep her safe.
DeleteWould you ever consider putting Lucky in an act with you or your family? Why or why not?
ReplyDeleteThis is our act! Sometimes we do programs for larger audiences!
DeleteDo you think that certain dogs are easier to train? Was Lucky easy to train?

She really likes everyone in the nursing homes. She doesn't care what people look like or what they're wearing. She tries to get everyone to pet her.
DeleteDO you have a cat? Or just Lucky. Some cats get along with dogs really well anyway
ReplyDeleteWe just have Lucky. I think if she had been raised with cats, she would like them!
ReplyDeleteHi, how are you doing? We are in second grade from Indiana? How is the weather there?
ReplyDeleteThe weather here in Florida is very nice. It can get very warm so Lucky likes to take her walks in the mornings!
